Unspiron downloaded some stupid audio update for vista. My kid is home from LSU with a laptop with no sound. Since it’s new, call Dell.
That’s exactly how I did it and worked for me I restarted the computer and everything was back to normal.

First attempts at fixing were the basic uninstall of the driver to have Windows reinstall. System and Maintenance,then click: Dell Inspiron Windows XP–there is no sound and no error messages.
I download Sigma Tel audio driver and got back with sound. System then on the left side click Device Manager then click Action and choose from the list Scan for hardware changes click on it and then the system it’s going to install the drivers automatically and you’re done. I did this and rebooted and no fix. The issue and most likely solution has not changed much since or earlier, when I first encountered it as a novice.

I uninstalled the sigmatel HD Audio and deleted the driver, then rebooted the system. I booted from the CD and audio tested perfectly fine in the diagnostics environment.
I no longer have the ability to use the modem or maybe it would work if I troubleshot a little further but since it has been years since I used a modem I didn’t bother trying.
